Working for a Christian-led company in Maryland: how to find one
By David Weigelt. Updated , 4 min read
Many Christian-led companies in Maryland don't advertise themselves that way, and many of their senior roles are never posted. You find them through people: owners' peer groups, church and marketplace networks, and introductions. Job boards list some openings, mostly at churches, ministries and nonprofits, with some businesses.
What "Christian-led" means, and what it doesn't
It means the owner's faith shapes how the company is run: how people are treated, how money is handled, how promises are kept. It doesn't mean everyone on the team shares that faith, and it doesn't mean you'll be hired or passed over because of yours. Most businesses can't make hiring decisions based on religion, and the good ones don't want to.
Why leaders go looking
The leaders I talk with say the same things. They want their work to feel like a calling and not only a job. They're tired of leaving their faith in the car. They want to work for an owner they can trust.
What to look for
Ask the owner what the company is for beyond profit, and listen for a real answer. Ask about a hard season and what they did. Ask how people leave the company, and what happened to the last senior leader who did. Ask how they decide what to spend and what to give. You're listening for calling, integrity, servant leadership, care for people and stewardship.
Where to look
Job boards such as Christian Career Center and Faith Driven Jobs list openings across the country. They're worth a look, but few of the listings are senior roles in Maryland businesses. Closer to home, the owners you want to meet are usually known by other owners, by their pastors, and by the people who serve them.
How I can help
I know owners in Frederick, Howard and Montgomery counties who run their companies this way. If you're an experienced executive, Integrator or second-in-command, tell me your story in a free 30-minute conversation. It's confidential. I'll only share your name after you say yes to a specific introduction.
